Mandatory insurance required for tourists entering Georgia starting from 2026
The State Revenue Committee reports that, according to information received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, starting from January 1, 2026, every tourist entering Georgia is required to present a document certifying health and accident insurance at the border checkpoint.
According to the State Revenue Committee (SRC), the insurance document can be presented in either physical or electronic format and must be in Georgian or English. It can be provided by either Georgian or foreign insurance companies, with a minimum insurance limit of 30,000 GEL.
The document must include the details of the parties to the insurance contract, the coverage area, the object of insurance, the start and end of the insurance period, the insured risks, the insurance amount limit, as well as the insurance premium amount, place, and term of payment. It is noted that the insurance must be valid for the entire duration of the tourist’s stay in Georgia.
At the same time, the SRC informs that several categories of individuals are exempt from the requirement to present mandatory insurance. These include holders of diplomatic or special entry visas to Georgia, holders of diplomatic, official, service, or special passports, as well as accredited employees of diplomatic missions, consular offices, international organizations, and their family members.
The requirement to present mandatory insurance also does not apply to individuals whose entry into Georgia is stipulated by international agreements or treaties, nor to drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transportation.
