Why has the price of LPG increased? Pashinyan and Papoyan provide clarifications

During the government session on January 15, the issue of the price increase for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was discussed. Gegham Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, noted that the price hike is a common seasonal phenomenon recorded almost every year in December. According to him, transport services become more expensive due to problems arising at Upper Lars, which in turn affects the final price. Gevorgyan emphasized that there is no deficit in the market.

Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan explained that LPG is imported to Armenia mainly through two routes: from Russia via Upper Lars and from Iran; however, there are currently difficulties in both directions. According to the Minister, under these conditions, businesses have been advised to use rail communication, which can ensure more stable supplies.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded that the issue should be viewed more broadly, in the context of peace and the opening of communications. According to him, it is important for Armenia to have diverse supply routes and sources, and the government is taking steps in that direction. Pashinyan assured that such a situation will not occur in December 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan also noted that the market will adapt to current conditions over time, and imports will be organized through more systematic and predictable transport routes.
