Gagik Sargsyan terminates his powers as president of the Ski Federation
Gagik Sargsyan, President of the Armenian Ski Federation, announced that he is terminating his powers as the head of the federation. He stated this during a Facebook live broadcast.
“I have been in professional sports for 21 years, and before that, I was an athlete. I have worked in the sector for years—first as General Secretary, then as President. Today, I have come to say that I have decided to terminate my powers because everything that has a beginning also has an end,” Sargsyan said during the Facebook live.
He emphasized that skiing cannot develop independently without state support, adding that his appeals to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport (MESCS) remained unanswered.
Sargsyan characterized his decision as being conditioned by the working atmosphere and the fact that his presence could be an obstacle to the development of the sport.
The Federation President had previously expressed his support for Mikayel Mikayelyan, who covered the word “Azerbaijan” on his sportswear with adhesive tape during a tournament held in Italy.
Following that incident, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport had demanded a clarification regarding the case, to which the Federation President responded that the athlete’s “step is more than clear and needs no clarification.” A week after this sporting scandal, Zhanna Andreasyan stated clearly: “sport should remain sport.”
Recently, Sargsyan had harshly criticized the MESCS, declaring that skiing is being neglected.
