Historic “Fern” blizzard paralyzes US aviation and dozens of states
The powerful winter storm “Fern” raging across the United States has caused serious disruptions in nearly all sectors of the country.
More than 13,000 flights have been canceled nationwide, marking one of the major aviation crises in recent years.
Due to heavy snow, icing, and freezing rain, a state of emergency has been declared in at least 18 states—including Texas, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Louisiana—affecting approximately 200 million people. As a result of the storm, more than 130,000 households remain without power supply.
According to the US Weather Prediction Center, up to 20-40 centimeters of snow is forecasted for New York, which could become a record high since 1996. The capital, Washington D.C., is also expecting up to half a meter of precipitation and severe frost.
According to local authorities, at least three deaths due to extreme cold have been recorded in New York, while a fatal traffic accident occurred in Tennessee.
