Telegram may face full restrictions in Russia
Roskomnadzor has not commented on the rumors regarding the complete blocking of the Telegram messenger. The agency’s press service told the news outlet that they have nothing to add to the information previously published.
Earlier, the “Baza” Telegram channel reported that the application could be fully blocked in Russia starting April 1. According to the channel, a full block of the messenger could begin from that day, similar to the measures previously taken against the Instagram and Facebook platforms. According to the same source, the restrictions will apply to both mobile and fixed internet networks.
At the same time, Sergey Boyarsky, head of the Russian State Duma Committee on Information Policy, stated that Telegram’s administration is in contact with Roskomnadzor and is trying to resolve the issue of content restrictions. In a conversation with the “Fontanka” portal, he noted that some materials for which removal requests were received are being deleted, while others are not.
Boyarsky emphasized that Telegram, unlike WhatsApp, responds to the agency’s inquiries. According to him, it remains unclear what prevents the platform from taking a “few steps” to fully address the issues recorded by Roskomnadzor.
Roskomnadzor previously stated that it would continue to apply consistent restrictions against Telegram to ensure compliance with the requirements of Russian legislation.
It should be noted that WhatsApp is owned by the Meta company, which has been recognized and banned as an extremist organization in Russia.
