Monument destroyed in the city of Martuni, Artsakh
Azerbaijan has completely destroyed the memorial complex in the city of Martuni, Artsakh, which was dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945) and the Artsakh Liberation War. The information was reported by Artsakh public figure Artak Mkrtchyan.
According to him, the memorial complex was opened on May 7, 2007, as a symbol uniting the memory of heroes from different generations. Mkrtchyan characterized the act as cultural genocide and a targeted policy aimed at erasing the Armenian trace, history, and memory in Artsakh. He also noted that in 2025, Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, while, in his assessment, the destruction of cultural values continues in the occupied territories.
According to Mkrtchyan, the silence of the international community is turning into acquiescence. He emphasized that the destruction of cultural heritage is a crime, and history cannot be erased.
In early February, reports also surfaced that a khachkar (cross-stone) of the church in the village of Vaguas, Artsakh, had been damaged and icons had been torn down.
