Restoration of the 17th Century Church in Gndevaz

Armenian specialists have been working for several months with colleagues from St. Petersburg to restore the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Gndevaz, located in the Vayots Dzor region. During the restoration work, the group of artist-restorers discovered 17th-century frescoes and began the restoration process. However, before starting the main work, the re-painted frescoes from 1906 were removed.

Restoration efforts on the frescoes had been ongoing since the 1950s. Unfortunately, during the cleaning of the plaster layer, several frescoes were damaged. Currently, the work is being done using new technologies. Initially, the fresco layer is stabilized with special injections, then cleaned, and finally only tinted.

Alongside the restoration of the frescoes, the church’s deteriorating roof and one of the vaults are also being renovated. The state plans to complete the project within two years. A budget of 137 million dram has been allocated for the restoration work.
