High-ranking police official arrested in connection with the March 1 case
During the preliminary investigation conducted by the General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee, it was revealed that on the morning of March 1, 2008, Hovhannes Tamamyan, the First Deputy Head of the General Department of Criminal Intelligence of the Police, without any justification, instructed police officers to beat E.A., a participant of the rally at Liberty Square in Yerevan, and transport them to the General Department for Combating Organized Crime.
The preliminary investigation found that the police officers acted beyond the scope of their official powers by using violence against E.A., delivering numerous strikes with their hands and feet, which resulted in severe, life-threatening injuries to the individual’s health.
Public criminal prosecution has been initiated against Hovhannes Tamamyan, and he was arrested on February 25, 2026.
