Graduates of top universities to be exempted from military service
The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia has adopted in its second reading and in its entirety the draft amendments to the Law “On Military Service and the Status of Servicemen,” with 68 votes in favor, 0 against, and 17 abstentions.
According to the adopted amendments, students who received a deferment for the purpose of studying at universities ranked within the top fifty of the Shanghai Ranking may be exempted from compulsory military service if, upon completing their studies, they return to Armenia and work for at least three years in a sector defined by the RA Government.
The Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport, Zhanna Andreasyan, previously noted that a study conducted on 57 young individuals who have already completed their studies revealed the following: only one of them served in the army, 4 are engaged in research work, 12 are wanted, and 40 did not undergo military service on other grounds.
According to the presented data, since 2018, 650 citizens have utilized this right, 570 of whom are continuing their studies and currently benefit from the right to deferment.
