Armenia Ratifies Agreement with Greece on the Protection of Cultural Property
The Government of Armenia today ratified an agreement between Armenia and Greece concerning the prevention of the theft and illegal excavation of cultural property, as well as its illicit import and export, the control of the transfer of ownership rights, and the return of cultural property to their countries of origin.
The justification presented by the Government notes that the document will contribute to the preservation and proper protection of the cultural heritage of both countries, as well as global cultural heritage.
The agreement also provides for cooperation between the respective bodies and specialists of the two countries, including the exchange of experience and training programs. These efforts will be aimed at preventing illicit trafficking, improving the processes for the return of cultural property, and the effective application of international restitution mechanisms.
Armenia and Greece are among the countries with the greatest historical and cultural heritage in the world. The black market, where historical artifacts are sold, is active in the region. Armenia and Greece face similar challenges in this regard, and mutual support can reduce these risks.
