Russian and Kazakh Wheat Arrives in Armenia via the Azerbaijan-Georgia Route
By the end of January 2026, 132 railway wagons of Russian wheat will reach Armenia, passing through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia. This was reported by the Ministry of Transport of Russia. In 2024, Armenia imported over 300 thousand tons of wheat from Russia.
The first batch of Russian wheat—15 wagons with approximately 1,000 tons of wheat—has already arrived in Armenia last night. The wagons originated from the Dimitrovgrad station in the Ulyanovsk Oblast. The cargo transportation was organized by the “Russian Railways” company. The train passed through the territory of Azerbaijan, crossed the Georgian-Armenian border, and arrived at the “Dalarik” station.
The cost of 1 ton of Russian wheat is currently about 70 thousand Drams, and Kazakh wheat is 65 thousand. However, these figures also depend on the type of wheat, the cost of transportation, and other factors. Russian wheat traveled about a thousand kilometers to reach Armenia, while Kazakh wheat is expected to travel about 2 thousand kilometers.
According to the Ministry, the organization of this new logistics route became possible after the restoration of cargo transit to Armenia through Azerbaijan, which is the first such instance since the 1990s. Apart from wheat, deliveries of other goods are also being discussed.
It should be recalled that on October 21, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that Azerbaijan was lifting all restrictions on cargo transit to Armenia, and the first transit cargo would be Kazakh grain. RA Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan later noted that the first batch of Kazakh wheat would enter Armenia via the Aktau–Baku route, and then by Azerbaijani and Georgian railways.
