Nikol Pashinyan attends the Second Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris
The Second Nuclear Energy Summit was held in Paris, where high-level guests were welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi.
The event was also attended by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Ministers of Slovakia and Croatia, and several other world leaders.
RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan delivered a speech, noting that following the first summit held in Brussels in 2024, this meeting would foster cooperation among countries in the field of civil nuclear energy.
Pashinyan emphasized that nuclear energy, as a low-carbon and stable source of energy, can effectively complement renewable energy sources without competing with them. He mentioned that at COP28, Armenia fully supported the declaration to triple nuclear energy by 2050 and praised the progress toward the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the program to extend the operation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) until 2036, stating that it will serve as a foundation for a safe transition to a new nuclear power unit. Reference was also made to small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, the study of which, along with the analysis of proposals from international partners, is ongoing.
Pashinyan also stressed the importance of a qualified workforce for the nuclear sector, noting that education and training programs are essential to ensure a skilled labor force. He stated that throughout the entire operation of the ANPP, no nuclear or radiation safety incidents have been recorded.
According to Pashinyan, the Paris summit will contribute to deepening international cooperation and creating new initiatives in the nuclear sector.
