Potential foreign interference in electoral processes: MFA submits report

The Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has submitted a report to the Investigative Committee regarding cases where certain actors abroad have attempted to influence Armenia’s electoral processes. These actions concern ethnic Armenians and citizens of the Republic of Armenia engaged in economic activities in those countries.

The RA Foreign Intelligence Service earlier reported that certain individuals abroad, acting on behalf of the special services of the respective country, are attempting to exert pressure on them, urging them to support certain political forces planning to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia. The report notes that such pressure may include, but is not limited to, financial support and organizational assistance.

As a result of verification measures, the MIA Police determined that there are apparent features of a crime: hindering the free exercise of citizens’ electoral rights and coercing them by exploiting material or other forms of dependency. The report, prepared on the same day, was transferred to the RA Investigative Committee for further proceedings.

The MIA Police warned that any illegal influence or interference in electoral processes is subject to legal assessment and calls on citizens to remain vigilant.
