The waste collection fee will be calculated based on the apartment’s area

On December 24, the Yerevan City Council introduced a proposal to calculate the waste collection fee starting in 2025 based on the apartment’s area. The program was presented by Davit Hakobyan, the head of the Yerevan Municipality’s Income Registration and Collection Department.

The average increase for a single apartment will be 80 drams, while for private houses, it will be 180 drams. However, for example, a household of five living in a 50 square meter house, which previously paid 1000 drams, will now pay 650 drams under the new law. On the other hand, owners of apartments with fewer residents but larger areas will pay slightly more.

The proposal also notes that there are 251,635 apartments in Yerevan, of which 52,641 are 1 room, 85,073 are 2 room, 91,829 are 3 room, and 22,092 are 4 or more-room apartments. The average area for each apartment type is 35 m² for a 1 room, 53 m² for a 2 room, 64 m² for a 3 room, and the average for 4 or more rooms is 88 m² and 110 m².

Thus, in a 35 m² apartment, where 2 people currently live and pay 400 drams per month, the new average fee based on area will be 455 drams. If a single person lives in a larger apartment and currently pays 200 drams per month, starting in 2025, their average waste collection fee will be around 670 drams per month. For private houses, this amount will average around 800 drams.

Currently, the waste collection fee is based on the number of registered residents in the apartment: 200 drams per person per month, or 2400 drams per year.
