Russian Gas Supply to Europe via Ukraine Halted

As of January 1, the supply of Russian gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory has been halted. This information is according to a report by Gazprom.

The statement notes that the pipeline passing through Ukraine is the oldest route for exporting gas from Russia to Europe. It was planned to be shut down by the end of 2024 when the contract was set to expire. Russia began reducing the gas flow through the pipeline in December 2019, just hours before the expiration of the contract signed between Gazprom and Ukraine’s Naftogaz.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in late December that he would not allow Russia to benefit from gas transit through Ukrainian territory, rejecting proposed schemes to send the gas to Europe under the guise of Azerbaijani supply. Despite the ongoing war, Moscow had continued supplying gas through Ukraine to Europe under the framework of the 2019 agreement.
