Armenian-Chinese Literary Bridge: A New Chapter in Cultural Relations
Armenian and Chinese readers now have the opportunity to read classical works from both countries in their native languages. A memorandum signed between Armenia and China stipulates that classical works from both nations are being and will continue to be translated. The memorandum establishes that each side is responsible for translating, publishing, and distributing the classical literature of the other country within its borders.
As a result, works such as Khachatur Abovian’s “Wounds of Armenia”, Muratsan’s “Gevorg Marzpetuni”, Movses Khorenatsi’s “History of Armenia”, Hovhannes Tumanyan’s “Fairy Tales”, and Grigor Zohrap’s “Short Stories” have been translated into Chinese. In Armenia, works like Shen Congwen’s “Border Town”, Lu Xun’s “Short Stories”, Qian Zhongshu’s “Fortress Besieged”, and several other works will be published.
According to the agreement, in 2026 and subsequent years, works such as the poems of Yeghishe Charents, Vahan Terian, and Avetik Isahakyan, “The Book of Sadness” by Grigor Narekatsi, “The Daredevils of Sassoun” epic, a collection of Armenian folk tales, short stories by Axel Bakunts, Stepan Zoryan, and Aghasi Ayvazyan, Hrant Matevosyan’s “Autumn Sun”, Shirvanzade’s “Chaos”, Raffi’s “The Memoirs of a Crusader” (Khachagoghi Hishatakaran), Gurgen Mahari’s “Burning Orchards”, and several works from modern Armenian prose and poetry will be published in Chinese.
The memorandum was signed on October 28, 2019, between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport of Armenia and the National Press and Publication Administration of China.
