A Certification System for Museums Established in Armenia

At the government meeting on January 9, the decision “On Establishing the Certification Procedure and Criteria for Museums” was adopted. Its purpose is to regulate the activities of museums, introduce unified criteria, and ensure their compliance with international standards.

The certification will be implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia in accordance with the Law on Museums and the newly established regulations. The project proposal states that the aim of the decision is to fully align privately or community-initiated museums with the concept of “museum” criteria, thereby contributing to the decentralization and revitalization of cultural life. To ensure this process, a professional committee for museum certification will be established by the minister’s decree, the composition and terms of reference of which will be approved in the near future.

Certified museums will receive a special certificate and be registered in the certification registry. The certificate will be issued for a period of 10 years with the possibility of re-certification.

This process will evaluate the quality of museum activities, organizational capacities, and will align national criteria with international standards.
