Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Are Rising in China and Other Countries
In several stores across Armenia, masks have returned to the shelves. The reason is a new virus, which was also recorded in China at the beginning of 2025. A significant increase in respiratory infections, including Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has been observed in the country. It ia noted particularly in northern regions. HMPV is a well-known respiratory virus that usually causes mild symptoms but can lead to more severe conditions in newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that laboratory tests in Armenia detected 10 cases of HMPV in 2023, while from January to April 2024, 50 cases were recorded. However, no cases of metapneumovirus have been identified since April. Globally, in the United Kingdom, HMPV was detected in about 4.5% of tested patients, which is considered within the seasonal norm. In Kazakhstan, 30 cases of the virus have been reported.
Currently, there is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for Human Metapneumovirus. Therefore, specialists recommend adhering to general hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
