The pro-European candidate has won the presidential elections in Moldova
Pro-European Maia Sandu has won the presidential elections in Moldova with 55.04% of the votes. Her opponent was the pro-Russian former prosecutor Alexandr Stoianoglo.
Sandu has received congratulations and support from the leaders of several European countries. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also congratulated her.
Before the elections, a referendum was held on the issue of enshrining European integration in the Constitution. 50.3% of the participants approved it.
Moldova is one of the smallest countries in Europe by population. This is due to significant emigration. Moldovan citizens have cast their votes by mail from Canada, the USA, and European countries.
