We consider ourselves out of the CSTO: Pashinyan
During a Q&A session in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the relations with the CSTO, stating that they have crossed the point of no return.
The difference in circumstances and its public expression make it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, for Armenia to return to the CSTO. We have already passed the point of no return. We consider ourselves out of the CSTO; let them decide whatever they want.
On December 4, CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov stated that Armenia’s absence from CSTO activities does not affect their effectiveness, but he added that Armenia is their ally, and all obligations towards Armenia remain in place.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously stated in September during the Second Global Armenian Summit that the CSTO creates threats to Armenia’s security, its future existence, sovereignty, and statehood.
Relations with the CSTO have worsened, especially after Azerbaijan’s attack in September 2022. Despite Yerevan’s demands, the CSTO has not condemned the attack on Armenia, a member of the alliance, nor has it acknowledged that Azerbaijan has occupied territories of Armenia.
In response, Yerevan rejected the proposal to deploy CSTO observers along the border. In 2024, Prime Minister Pashinyan stated that Armenia’s membership in the alliance is de facto suspended, and it may also be suspended de jure if the allies do not change their position.
