Criminalization of Forcing Candidates to Renounce Their Mandate
A package of amendments to the Electoral Code has been submitted to the National Assembly.
The proposed amendments aim to criminalize the act of forcing election candidates to renounce their mandate.
The draft law also enables foundations to carry out observer missions. It is proposed to suspend the electoral process in cases of martial law or a state of emergency and to resume the process after they are lifted.
Armenuhi Harutyunyan, Acting Minister of Justice, mentioned that the adoption of these changes stems from the Government’s 2021-2026 action plan. The package has also received positive feedback from the Venice Commission.
