The world’s reaction following the events in Syria

Syrian opposition fighters have declared the country “liberated,” after which President Bashar al-Assad fled the capital in an unknown direction. Reports suggest his aircraft disappeared from radar.

Since 2000, Syria has been led by Bashar al-Assad, the son of Hafez al-Assad. Following the uprisings that began in Syria in 2011, Assad’s government took harsh measures to suppress the protests, which escalated into a civil war.

Assad’s regime received significant support from Russia and Iran, which played a crucial role in maintaining his grip on power. Meanwhile, Western nations and others accused Assad’s government of gross human rights violations, including the use of chemical weapons.

After 13 years of war, the Assad family’s more than half-century rule came to an end. Several countries around the world have reacted to these events:

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “We are closely monitoring the developments in Syria and hope for the country to return to stability as soon as possible.”

French President Emmanuel Macron: “The barbaric state has fallen. Finally.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “Bashar al-Assad brutally oppressed his people. He bears responsibility for countless lives lost under his reign.”

Russia: “Following negotiations between Assad and various conflict participants in the Syrian Arab Republic, he decided to resign from the presidency and leave the country, directing a peaceful transition of power. Russia did not participate in these negotiations.”

Turkey: “The new Syria must pose no threat to its neighbors and must eliminate existing dangers.”

United States: “President Joe Biden and his team are closely monitoring the extraordinary events in Syria and maintaining constant communication with regional partners.”
