A three-day primary election has begun in Gyumri

On December 8, a three-day primary election began in Gyumri. Due to its results it would be determined which of the seven candidates will be appointed as the city’s interim mayor.

The preliminary election includes candidates such as “Civil Contract” MPs David Arushanyan and Karen Sarukhanyan, former Deputy Mayor of Gyumri and the Prime Minister’s wife’s relative Vahagn Mkrtchyan, Civil Contract Council member Shavarsh Aramyan, Shirak coordinator Emma Barseghyan, Head of Gyumri’s Unified Social Service subdivision and former MP Sarik Minasyan, and former advisor to the Shirak governor Levon Ananyan.

Mobile teams are visiting Gyumri residents’ homes, offering them the chance to vote for one of the candidates mentioned.

The results will be summarized on December 10, after which the Civil Contract Board will announce the selected candidate. However, before that, Parliament must pass the second reading of amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government, these changes would grant the Prime Minister the authority to make an appointment to this position, which is currently prohibited by law.
