The EU monitoring mission in Armenia may be extended for another two years

The deployment of the European Union’s civilian mission in Armenia could be extended for an additional two years. This proposal was made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

Kallas noted that member states have welcomed the proposal and are currently discussing the legal acts. A decision may be made in the coming days. Despite the mission’s activities, Azerbaijan has been accusing the mission for months of espionage and destabilizing the region.

These accusations from Baku have been addressed. It has been emphasized that the EU mission’s mandate in Armenia is very clear: to monitor and report on the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border on the ground and to contribute to the EU’s efforts in conflict resolution.

The EU monitoring mission in Armenia began its activities on October 20, 2022. Initially, the EU sent 40 observers to Armenia. In February 2023, 100 civilian observers arrived in Armenia, and their number doubled in the following months.
