Pashinyan states shortest route from Azerbaijan to Turkey passes through Armenia

The shortest railway and automobile route from Azerbaijan to Turkey is the Ijevan-Dilijan-Vanadzor-Jajur-Gyumri-Akhurik road. RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this during a question-and-answer session with the government in the National Assembly, responding to a question from MP Gegham Nazaryan.

The Member of Parliament inquired whether the restoration of the railway section between Ijevan and Azerbaijan had been addressed during discussions on the “Trump Way” project. The Prime Minister confirmed that this issue is being discussed.

According to Pashinyan, studies by the Armenian side show that the aforementioned direction is the shortest from Azerbaijan to Turkey. He noted that there is a short corridor in the Fioletovo section, and if the Ijevan-Hrazdan railway branch is connected to the Vanadzor-Gyumri branch, the shortest railway path will be formed.

At the same time, the Prime Minister recalled that due to landslides existing for over 30 years in the section of Haghartsin village, the operation of the railway had been suspended. In his assessment, the problem is solvable if sufficient cargo flow and project profitability are ensured.

Earlier, it was reported that a joint statement signed in Washington envisages the creation of a strategic transit road through the south of Armenia, which should provide a connection between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan. Pashinyan later clarified that the matter is not about leasing land, but rather about granting development rights.
