The Pope’s First Stop is in Turkey

Pope Leo XIV of Rome has arrived in Turkey as part of his first foreign trip. He met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

The Pope’s working schedule includes a number of important visits. Specifically, he will travel to Istanbul, where he will visit the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, meet with Patriarch Archbishop Sahak Mashalyan, and pray at the Holy Mother of God Cathedral (Surp Mariam Astvatsatsin).

The Pope also plans to travel to Iznik, the ancient city of Nicaea, where he will participate in events dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.

It should be noted that yesterday the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople informed that Patriarch Sahak Mashalyan traveled to Ankara at the invitation of the President of Turkey to participate in the official reception organized in honor of the Pope.
