Huge Ice Deposits Found on the Moon
Thanks to the data analysis from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), it has been revealed that there are far more resources on the Moon than previously thought.
Researchers have long known that there is water on the Moon. Ice has been detected between lunar dust and rocks. Signs of ice have been found in several areas near the South Pole that are permanently in shadow.
According to NASA, such evidence has been found near 77 degrees southern latitude, where the temperature never rises above -198 degrees Celsius.
There is still no clear data on whether these ice reserves are on the surface or hidden beneath a dry layer of lunar rock. However, scientists speculate that about 5 liters of ice may be found in an area of approximately 1 square meter, buried about 1 meter deep.
The presence of ice is crucial for lunar exploration and future space missions. As NASA has highlighted, ice is essential for various purposes, including protection from radiation. Moreover, ice can be broken down into its components to produce oxygen or even rocket fuel.
