Singer Cher has appealed to the Armenian government
Singer Cher has appealed to the Armenian government for the release of Bunka, the elephant at the Yerevan Zoo. She has requested that the elephant be freed and transferred to a special sanctuary where he can walk, run, and interact with other elephants freely.
I write to you today not only as an artist who shares a deep connection with her Armenian heritage, but also as a co-founder of the Free The Wild organization. Bunka’s story has touched the hearts of people around the world. I understand that all logistical costs associated with his relocation, including transportation and veterinary care, have already been generously covered by the NGOs currently fighting for his release, – Cher wrote.
Since 2021, Bunka the elephant has gained international attention. The campaign for his protection and release was initiated by tourism expert and Wanderlust Magazine correspondent-editor Mark Stretton.
Elephants are social animals and prefer to live in groups. It is important for them to interact with other elephants, as isolation can lead to stress. Back in 2022, the zoo announced plans to build an open enclosure and bring a companion for Bunka in 2023. However, to this day, Bunka remains alone.
