The arrival of the first group of Syrian Armenians in Armenia is expected on December 14
Hovhannes Aleksanyan, the head of the Repatriation Department of the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, stated during a press conference on December 5 that there are currently about 10-12 thousand Armenians in Aleppo. They are mainly settled in the Nor Gyugh, Aziziye, and Suleimaniye districts.
In the 1-2 days following the escalation, some Armenian families were able to leave the city via secondary routes. We are in contact with such families. After that, all roads in and out of the city were closed. Communication with the city is disrupted, but it still exists.
Initially, all Armenian institutions were closed. On December 3, a large gathering took place at the St. Savior Church in Aleppo. The Diocese of Beröa, with financial mediation from the Cilician Catholicosate of the Armenians, decided to assist underprivileged families.
Currently, it is not possible to carry out evacuations or send aid. The Aleppo airport and industrial zone are now controlled by Islamist groups. There is no guarantee of safely evacuating a large number of people.
However, families located in other cities can return to Armenia on the Damascus-Yerevan flight on December 14.
