Use of single-use plastic products to be reduced in Armenia
Starting January 1, 2027, the use of single-use plastic products will be restricted in Armenia. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment.
The following will be prohibited: the availability of polyethylene bags and sacks, with the exception of bags used for weight packaging and trash bags made from secondary raw materials; and the availability of single-use containers and tableware made of plastic or polystyrene foam (plates, cups, spoons, forks, knives, straws for drinking and stirring). As an alternative, reusable bags made of paper, cloth, and other alternative materials, tableware made of paper and wood, and containers made of paper or foil will be used.
However, the problem lies in the fact that similar restrictions are already in force in Armenia. Since January 1, 2022, a law has been in effect prohibiting the use of polyethylene bags up to 50 microns thick in retail outlets, with the exception of bags intended for weight packaging and trash made from secondary raw materials. Despite the law being in force, many shops and supermarkets continue to sell polyethylene bags without oversight regarding compliance with the requirements. If the law is not functioning with respect to polyethylene bags, it is difficult to imagine how effective the new restrictions coming into force in 2027 will be.
