Issue resolved for 11,500 citizens without electricity for nearly 3 days; power supply restored
Electricity supply has been restored to all addresses disconnected following a fire at one of Yerevan’s substations. This was reported by the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) company.
The incident involved the “Vardashen” 110/35/6 kV substation, where a fire resulted in power outages across several areas of the capital. Approximately 50,000 subscribers were left without electricity due to the accident; the issue was resolved for 40,000 of them within one day. For the remaining 11,500 residents, power supply was restored the following day by gradually re-energizing subscribers fed from the “Vardashen” substation. This was announced by Romanos Petrosyan, the interim manager of ENA.
It should be noted that the “Grigor Lusavorich” Maternity Hospital was also located in the affected area, where electricity was provided via diesel generators until the restoration of the central supply.
To recap, the fire broke out near midnight on December 27, in an area of approximately 200 square meters on the road section leading from Yerevan’s Nubarashen highway toward the Erebuni Museum. The substation’s property was partially burned. The fire was contained at 00:53 on December 28 and extinguished by 01:20.
According to ENA interim manager Romanos Petrosyan, an internal investigation is being conducted within ENA to determine the causes of the accident, and inspections have also been carried out at other substations. Simultaneously, it was announced that reinforced duty shifts have been established in the electric networks for the pre-holiday and holiday season.
