In 2025, a modern landfill will start operating for the Gegharkunik and Kotayk regions

In 2025, a modern landfill will start operating for the Gegharkunik and Kotayk regions. This announcement was made in parliament by Armenia’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Davit Khudatyan.

The authorities had initially promised to complete construction by 2022, but the landfill has not yet become operational.

Responding to a question from one of the MPs, Khudatyan stated that the construction of the landfill has been completed, and garbage trucks have been imported. These trucks are currently in the registration phase. The modern landfill is expected to start operating in 4-5 months.

Khudatyan added that the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure is also discussing the possibility of constructing large, modern landfills. The plan includes closing existing landfills across Armenia and leaving only 4-5 modernized landfills. In January 2024, the government decided to modernize and improve existing landfills before building sanitary landfills in 8 regions of Armenia and Yerevan.

The project for modern landfills began back in 2017. It was planned to construct two modern landfills, one in Nubarashen and the other for the Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions. The project is being implemented with a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The initial cost of the project was 11 million euros.
