Iran has a new leader

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, on the occasion of his election to the post of Supreme Leader.

It is worth recalling that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected yesterday as the spiritual leader following his father’s death as a result of strikes by the United States and Israel. Generally, 56-year-old Mojtaba has remained out of the public eye for many years; according to Iranian media, he has never held government positions, has not made public speeches, and only a limited number of photos and videos of him have been published in open sources.

Regardless of this circumstance, claims have circulated over the years that he has wielded significant influence in Iran.

This is the first such instance in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the selection of the leader has traditionally been based on the principle that the individual must be chosen for their religious authority and leadership qualities, rather than inheriting power through the family.
