In 2024, 816 criminal proceedings were initiated by the investigators of the Anti-Corruption Committee
Corruption is considered one of the greatest challenges facing modern states. It remains a pressing issue in Armenia as well. From January 1 to October 30, 2024, the investigators of the Anti-Corruption Committee initiated around 816 criminal proceedings, 131 of which were sent to court. The total material damage caused to Armenia amounted to approximately 100 million drams. This was stated by Edgar Arsenyan, Head of the General Prosecutor’s Office Department, in an interview with the media.
However, changes have been made in this area. Now, if a person suspected of corruption admits their crime, repents, and assists the investigating body in identifying other participants in the crime, they may be exempted from criminal liability. A mandatory condition is that the suspect must also reimburse the damage caused to the state.
In cases of money laundering, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia relies on new legislative regulations and precedent-setting decisions of the Court of Cassation. It is now sufficient to prove that the property was acquired through criminal means, without the need to meticulously prove the preceding crime.
Nevertheless, the fight against corruption remains a continuous process aimed at establishing a fair and transparent state system for the benefit of the country’s development and the welfare of society.
