
The 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster Gukesh D. Dommaraju became the World Chess Champion
Indian Grandmaster Gukesh D. Dommaraju has become the World Chess Champion. In the World Chess Championship match, he defeated the 17th World Champion, Chinese Ding Liren, with a score of 7.5:6.5.
Dommaraju played with the black pieces and secured victory on the 58th move. Gukesh is the second Indian World Chess Champion in history, following Viswanathan Anand.
Gukesh is also the youngest World Chess Champion in history. The 18-year-old Dommaraju is four years younger than the previous record-holder, Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov, who won the title in 1985 at the age of 22.
The total prize fund for the final match was $2.5 million. The grandmasters will receive $200,000 for each game they win.
