Armenian skier covered “Azerbaijan” inscription on his shirt; federation clarifies

The Armenian Ski Federation has explained the incident involving Armenian cross-country skier Mikayel Mikayelyan, who covered the “Azerbaijan” inscription during the Tour de Ski tournament. The president of the federation, Gagik Sargsyan, published both the inquiry from the Ministry of ESCS (Education, Science, Culture and Sport) and the federation’s response on his Facebook page, stating that the situation is clear and requires no further clarification.

The incident took place in Toblach, Italy, during the tournament when Mikayelyan covered the “Azerbaijan” inscription using adhesive tape. The tournament was sponsored by Azerbaijan, and the country’s name was displayed on the skiing suits and on large panels throughout the event. Due to this action, Mikayelyan was fined by the FIS (International Ski Federation), though the amount has not yet been disclosed.

Responding to the Ministry’s inquiry, the federation noted that the incident does not bear any political nature, and the Armenian athlete’s action is natural and understandable.

The RA Minister of ESCS Zhanna Andreasyan mentioned in her statement that they are aware of the incident but emphasized that sport should remain about sport. She added that they would assess the necessity of further steps after receiving clarifications from the federation.

The federation’s president, Gagik Sargsyan, also stated that the organization will pay the fine.
