Biometric passports and ID cards to be available starting this autumn
Citizens of the Republic of Armenia (RA) will be able to obtain new biometric passports and identification cards starting this autumn. This was announced by the RA Minister of Internal Affairs, Arpine Sargsyan, during the 2025 annual year-end press conference.
The Minister noted that work is currently underway to finalize the passport design, and the appearance of the new documents will be presented to the public in the near future. Even after the biometric system is implemented, old-style passports will remain valid until their expiration date.
The cost of the new passports and ID cards is still in the finalization stage and will be made public soon. According to the Minister, there are also intentions to introduce mechanisms that will motivate citizens to apply for new biometric passports more frequently.
It should be noted that for more than 10 years, passports and ID cards in Armenia were supplied by the Polish company PWPW. In April 2025, it was announced that the consortium of IDEMIA Identity & Security France and A.C.I. Technology S.à.r.l. was declared the winner of the tender for the implementation of the biometric system.
