10th Anniversary of the Death of Historian Professor Petros Hovhannisyan Marked
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of the prominent Armenian historian, source critic, and long-time professor at Yerevan State University, Petros Hovhannisyan. The scholar, who headed the YSU Chair of Armenian History from 2013 to 2016, left behind a rich scientific legacy, becoming one of the vital pillars for the development of Armenian studies.
Petros Hovhannisyan authored more than 300 scientific publications, including dozens of monographs and textbooks for both higher education and schools. His research focused primarily on the bibliography of the Armenian Question and the Armenian Genocide, as well as the historiographical heritage of renowned historians, particularly Nicholas Adontz. Under the professor’s direct leadership and editorship, the “Catholicoses of All Armenians” encyclopedia was created. In addition to his university activities, he taught at the Hamazkayin Higher Institute of Armenian Studies in Beirut, the Vaskenian Theological Academy in Sevan, and the Gevorkian Theological Seminary in Holy Etchmiadzin. For his prolific scientific and pedagogical work, the scholar was awarded the title of Honored Teacher of the Republic of Armenia and the “Saint Sahak – Saint Mesrop” Order of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Petros Hovhannisyan’s scientific activities played a decisive role in the establishment of the source study and bibliography of Armenian history. The legacy he left continues to be a cornerstone of Armenian studies in both education and research.
