Control of the Armenia-Turkey border fully in the hands of RA NSS Border Guard Troops

Since the beginning of 2026, service at the “Akhurik” crossing point of the Armenia-Turkey state border has been carried out exclusively by servicemen of the Border Guard Troops of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia. This information is included in the report on the implementation progress of the RA Government’s 2021–2026 program for the year 2025.

The report notes that currently, there is no active crossing point on the state border of Armenia that is not under the full control of the NSS Border Guard Troops.

Russian border guards were stationed at Armenia’s borders based on a treaty signed between Armenia and Russia on September 30, 1992, which regulated the status and operating conditions of the Border Guard Troops of the Russian Federation located on the territory of the Republic of Armenia.

Since mid-2024, control at “Zvartnots” Airport has been carried out exclusively by Armenian border guards. The same practice is also in effect at the “Agarak” checkpoint on the border with Iran. Since February of this year, the border service at the “Margara” crossing point of the Armenia-Turkey state border is also being carried out exclusively by the forces of the RA Border Guard Troops.
