What Impact Will Trump’s Victory in the U.S. Elections Have on Armenia?
The U.S. presidential elections took place on November 5, 2024. It was the 60th presidential election in the country’s history.
The Democratic Party nominated Kamala Harris as their candidate for president. The Republican Party nominated the 45th president of the U.S., Donald Trump, who won the election with 50.7% of the vote, securing a second term.
According to political analyst Suren Surenyants, neither Harris nor Trump had a particularly strong focus on the Armenian agenda, and the U.S. presidential election would not drastically change anything for our country.
Surenyants notes that one of Trump’s priorities is the cessation of wars. This policy gives hope for the end of conflicts in neighboring regions.
During his 4 years in office, Joe Biden did not hold any meetings or phone calls with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. I do not expect significant changes regarding Armenia, – Surenyants notes.
According to political analyst Lilith Dallakyan the Republic of Armenia has no choice but to work with the new U.S. leader.
The United States is currently the world’s hegemon. We are in a situation where we must work with any leader, there is no alternative. Armenia’s policy must be with Trump’s administration, and should try to establish connections, where the Armenian community can play a significant role, – says the political analyst.
The political analyst notes that personal connections will be cruical during Trump’s tenure. The Armenian community needs to reorganize. For 100 years, Armenia has been calling for the U.S. to recognize the Genocide, Biden recognized it, but no further action followed. Armenian- American relations should be brought to an institutional new level, based on mutual interests.
The analyst also adds that there are two options regarding the Russia–Ukraine war, according to experts.
The first option is the one proposed by former Secretary of State Pompeo and former UK Prime Minister Johnson, according to which the area controlled by Russia remains under Russian control, but it is not recognized as part of Russia. Meanwhile, the area controlled by Ukraine would become part of NATO. The second option is that Ukraine does not become a NATO member, but guarantees are made that Russia will not attack the area it controls, – notes the political scientist.
