The statue of goddess Anahit will be exhibited at the Museum of History of Yerevan
The head sculpture and left arm of the bronze statue of Goddess Anahit were temporarily brought to Armenia from the British Museum. The statue of Goddess Anahit will be on display at the Museum of Armenian History for about 6 months on Armenia’s Independence Day starting September 21. The international exhibition, which will showcase motherhood, is titled “Mother Divinity, Mary by Anahit.”
In an interview with Public TV, Zhanna Andreasyan called this day symbolic and spoke about such cooperation in the international sphere.
“ We have had many successful collaborations with various prestigious museums so far. Usually our exhibits have been displayed outside. Today there is also a unique opportunity in the sense that we are borrowing exhibits from prestigious museums and making them available to our community.”
The statue of the goddess was found in 1872 in the village of Satala in the Erzrum province of Western Armenia. It passed into the hands of different merchants, then ended up in Rome, then in the British Museum. The official page of the latter states that the statue probably had gems instead of eyes, and the head was damaged during excavations.
Director of the Historical Museum David Petrosyan signed a loan agreement for the goddess statue back in April. Similar cooperation is planned for the future.
