Mark Rutte Assumes the Position of NATO Secretary General
As of October 1, 2024, Mark Rutte will assume the role of the 14th Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), replacing Jens Stoltenberg, who held the position for over 10 years.
Rutte was chosen for the position of NATO Secretary General with the agreement of 32 countries. He emphasized three key priorities: ensuring NATO can defend itself against any threat, supporting Ukraine, and addressing global challenges by working with both “near and far” partners.
“It is a great honor to be appointed as NATO Secretary General. The alliance is and will remain the cornerstone of our collective security. There is nothing we cannot achieve together,” Rutte said.
He also addressed the Russia-Ukraine war, stating that they will do everything to help Ukraine achieve victory.
Rutte is the longest-serving Prime Minister of the Netherlands to date, having held the position from October 2010 until July 2024.
