Will there be a law restricting the use of salt?

35% of Armenia’s adult population frequently adds salt to their food during meals, while 71% overuse salt when cooking at home. Experts emphasize that the daily recommended intake of salt for the human body is 5 grams. But in our country, this amount is double the norm.

Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan addressed the issue of excessive salt consumption, noting that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Armenia, with salt overuse being one of the primary contributing factors.

Minister Avanesyan mentioned that they have already reduced the salt content in two key products—bread and cheese. Avanesyan added that a draft law or government decision on this matter is currently under discussion.

The Minister believes that the example of many other countries can be applied. In several nations, health ministries provide health-conscious establishments with recognition symbols, which can also serve as a promotional tool. This indicates that the establishment adheres to higher standards and supports a healthier diet.

It is expected that the Ministry will continue to take an incentive-based approach and may later consider administrative measures if necessary.
