The Potential of an EU Probationary Period: How Will Armenia Benefit?

The European Commission is discussing a new approach under which countries joining the EU (European Union) will undergo a probationary period with limited rights before becoming full members. Armenia, which has repeatedly demonstrated its readiness to join the EU, may consider this system as a first step.

Marta Koos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, has proposed a new format—a “probationary period”—for new members. During this time, member states would receive certain limited rights until they meet all EU criteria. If a country fails to meet these requirements, its membership might be suspended.

The first countries to benefit will likely be Ukraine and Moldova.

For Armenia, this approach provides an opportunity to strengthen relations, develop economic ties, education, and the legal system, thereby preparing the country for full integration into the EU.

At the same time, it will allow the observation of the stance and attitude of neighboring countries.
