Discussions Held on the Selection of Armenia’s Film for the Oscars

Armenia will be represented at the 97th Academy Awards by director Edgar Baghdasaryan’s feature film “Yasha and Leonid Brezhnev.”

This decision by the Armenian National Cinema Academy has sparked criticism, with detractors arguing that the committee did not submit a “more deserving film,” referring to Shoghakat Vardanyan’s “1489.”

The situation regarding the film selection for the Oscars was addressed in the National Assembly. Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasian stated that the issue is not within the direct jurisdiction of the ministry and is handled by an independent body. She further explained that the Armenian Film Foundation will initiate the appropriate process, seek clarifications, and respond in case of any violations.

Shoghakat Vardanyan’s “1489” won the “Best Film” award at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.
