European Parliament Adopts Resolution on Situation in Azerbaijan, Human Rights Violations, and Relations with Armenia
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution titled “On the Situation in Azerbaijan, Human Rights Violations, and Relations with Armenia” with a vote of 453 in favor, 31 against, and 89 abstentions. The resolution addresses the key issues related to Azerbaijan’s internal situation and its role in international relations.
In the document, the European Parliament:
- Calls on Azerbaijan to engage in peace agreement negotiations with Armenia and respect the rights of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, stating that any military action is unacceptable and could have serious consequences for Azerbaijan-EU partnership.
- Reaffirms support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Azerbaijan and Armenia, expressing support for the normalization of relations between the two countries based on mutual recognition of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders, in accordance with the 1991 Almaty Declaration.
- Azerbaijan has demanded the withdrawal of its troops from all of Armenia’s sovereign territory and to respect Armenia’s territorial integrity. In this context, it is noted that the Azerbaijani army continues to occupy no less than 170 km² of Armenia’s sovereign territory.
- Emphasizes that Azerbaijan must address the issue of establishing a connection with Nakhchivan while respecting Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- Reiterates that the EU should be ready to impose sanctions on anyone threatening Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
- Welcomes actions taken by EU member states to provide defensive military assistance to Armenia and calls on other countries to consider similar initiatives.
The resolution also addressed Azerbaijani gas, urging EU countries to gradually cease reliance on Azerbaijani gas as an alternative, given that Russian gas is being sold under the name “Azerbaijani gas” in European markets.
