The Kaps Reservoir, under construction for nearly 40 years, is still being built

Work on the Kaps and Vedi reservoirs will continue. Plans also include the construction of 28 additional small reservoirs. This was announced by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Gnel Sanosyan.

The incomplete Kaps Reservoir is located in the Shirak region. Construction began in 1985. It was designed to have a 4 km shoreline. It should be with a capacity of 90 million cubic meters, and a basin area of 430 square kilometers.

Construction continued until 1989. But was halted entirely after the earthquake. In 2013, the government approved a draft financing agreement between Armenia and the German (KfW) Development Bank, aimed at restoring the reservoir. However, work did not start.

10 years later, 95.2 million euros were allocated for construction through co-financing from the government and the Development Bank (KWf). Construction work began in May of last year.

In 2025, 30.7 billion drams (79 million dollars) will be allocated for construction in the irrigation system. In addition to the Vedi and Kaps reservoirs, 3 more reservoirs will be built. Designs for 28 small, daily-regulation reservoirs are ready. The purpose of these smaller reservoirs is to regulate large water supplies from reservoirs to canals.
