The Student Will Decide When to Graduate and What Subjects to Study

According to the draft of the new “Law on Higher Education and Science,” it is proposed to give students the opportunity to shape their educational program and decide the duration of their studies.

According to the draft, it will be possible to study certain subjects in other institutions, while the diploma will be granted by the primary university. Any applicant must have at least good grades in Armenian language and mathematics, which will be assessed through external evaluation before the unified admission exams. The universities will determine the mechanisms for organizing the exams.

The proposed draft allows students to shape their own educational program, which may lead to challenges.

According to education expert Serob Khachatryan, when students are given the opportunity to act independently, they tend to work rather than study. Despite this, the expert considers the draft a positive development.
