Lukashenko Wins Presidential Elections in Belarus
According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission, Belarus’ current leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has been re-elected as president for the seventh time. 86.82% of the electorate voted for him.
Liberal Democratic Party leader Oleg Gaidukevich garnered 2.02% of the votes, entrepreneur Hanna Kanapatskaya received 1.86%, Communist Party Central Committee First Secretary Sergey Syrankov collected 3.21%, and Republican Party of Labor and Justice Chairman Alexander Khizhnyak gained 1.2%. Additionally, 5.1% of voters cast ballots against all candidates. Invalid ballots have not yet been included in the calculations.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported no serious violations during the elections. Moreover, they described them as the most peaceful elections to date.
Lukashenko has been leading the country since 1994. He is the longest-serving president in Europe.
During his campaign, Lukashenko criticized Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for establishing close ties with the European Union, stating that such a policy could harm Armenia.
In the Russia-Ukraine war, he has openly expressed support for Russia.
