The Mother See condemns the criminal prosecution initiated against Karekin II
The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has strongly condemned the initiation of criminal prosecution against Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, and the ban on his departure from Armenia.
The statement notes that these actions are groundless, illegal, and political in nature, and they obstruct the pontifical activities of the Supreme Patriarch.
With this obviously unconstitutional and unlawful stance of interfering in the internal life of the Church, the authorities are hindering the pontifical mission of the Supreme Patriarch. Furthermore, this is an act of disrespect toward millions of believers and the centuries-old institution that has been and remains an unwavering pillar of Armenian statehood.
The Mother See calls for an immediate review of the decisions made regarding the Armenian Patriarch, six bishops, and the secretary, as they divide society and diminish the state’s credit and reputation.
